The ninja went off this week, and as you can understand, fans are freaking out over the whole ordeal.ДЄs Naruto took on Isshiki, fans watched in awe as Pierrot brought in some of the industry's best artists to liven things up. Naruto is expected to die after using this form, and he made sure this power's sacrifice would be worth it. BorutoВ fans watched as the hero brought his Baryon form to life for the first time, and to make it worst, the episode told fans this power was a one and done. The show returned with its eye on Naruto, and the OG hero powered up into a brand-new form. On an emotional one, I'm left empty.The whole thing went live thanks to episode 217, and it would put things lightly to say fans were excited. A lot of Shonen, (and I guess general anime) get caught up in shaking the camera, fancy effects and fast movement as the checkboxes that create an 'epic fight' when in reality it simply dilutes any possible tension it so sorely needs. It's not always about the fanciest, fastest animation possible. As a result, the following blow and impact are felt immensely. Every wind up to an attack is given the proper pacing and set up. What's so successful about Norio's animation and the direction and storyboarding that went with it, is that there is never a moment of confusion or question as to what is happening on screen. Who has the upper hand here? Where is the weight, cause and effect of each blow? Where is my eye supposed to look. It's a flatly paced spectacle tug of war. But it all feels like flash over substance. These shots look super impressive and technically at the top of their field. See these are great examples of what I mention in the OP.Дon't get me wrong. The pacing, choreography, sound design and mixing are all crucial elements that help elevate the 'event' feeling of a climactic battle such as this, which I feel 133 checked every box.ДЄnd I'd just like to make clear that I'm not saying this is the best animated fight ever or even in all of anime, just in Shonen. It's great to have fancy animation, but that's only one aspect that feels like it gets all the focus usually. The sum of it's parts really put this fight heads and shoulders above the usual offerings imo. The use of the BGM is at it's best in this battle here, and the flourishes of the added flute and guitar during certain segments of intense action really complement the fighting well. When the music kicks in, it really amplifies the on screen action. The reverb feels great and really amps the scale of the events happening on screen. There are long stretches of silence where the only sound comes from the attacks and blows from the characters. This is an underrated aspect of the episode that doesn't get much mention I feel. The power struggle is palpable, creating great tension and excitement for what comes next. Naruto, brought to the edge of death, triggers the Nine-tale's chakara, nearly obliterating Sasuke, who is once again overwhelmed.

He finally taps into the full potential of his sharingan, and overtakes Naruto. When Naruto attacks first, Sasuke is ovewhelmed. Each segment of action properly escalates the one preceding it, reaching a great climax by the end of the episode. They don't overstay their welcome and break up the pace of action well. The flashbacks come at just the right moment for some cooldown after a barrage of attacks.

The result is a series of fancy drawings and movements that resemble chaos that flatlines instead of a well paced exchange of blows that really create a believable power struggle. Instead of highs and lows to increase the tension of a fight, the common route is to saturate the screen with non-stop action for the duration of the battle. It feels like a lot of the fights we get simply default to spectacle rather than focused direction. Okay so the animation is great, but so is a lot of key fights in a lot of animated shonen right? Well sure, but there's a lot to take into consideration.
